The purpose of this project is to invite students to share what they know about their families with their classmates, larger school community and their families. Students will develop skills in writing, story creation, collaboration and sharing. Due to a focus on integrating technology into the learning, this project will develop students' skills in technological literacy.
This project will include a class idea web/mind map activity, several opportunities for students to create stories about their families, a family traditions mini-video, a map of their family home, and to share and comment on each others' work via a class blog. Additional opportunities for technology integrated learning are included in the optional lessons that take place between the idea web/mind map activity and the family stories activity.
Online sharing is an integral part of this project, so as to make it available for colleagues, students and parents to view and comment on it. This will require a class blog or website. It would be ideal for you to post updates on the project as you go along so that the students can receive comments on their progress. If you do not already have a classroom blog or web site see the "Class Blog" tab under "more" at the top of this page.
In order for this project to be a success you will need to have periodical access to a class set of computers (ie. a computer lab or a laptop cart). Access to a computer that is connected to an overhead projector or a SMARTboard would be an asset for the class idea web/mind map activity as well as for instructing students on how to use many of the online story programs. Of course this is not 100% necessary as the idea web/mind map could be created easily on a chalk board, however I would recommend using web applications as much as possible to assist with developing your students' technological literacy.
Also, depending on your students' familiarity with computers (as well as your comfort level) you may want to invite parent helpers to aid and participate at various times throughout the project.
